PURPOSE:
To evaluate the efficacy of dual energy spectral CT through spectral filtering method in quantification of fat density using phantom.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:
The study of a CT phantom did not require institutional review board approval. We made a CT phantom of mixture of oil and water using surfactant and put it into the ten plastic vials. Mixture of oil and water was composed with an increasing percentage of oil content from 10% to 100% oil with 10 % interval. Phantom was scanned using a fast-KV switching based dual energy scan (GSI CT, 80kVp and 140kVp) with the 64-detector CT scanner. Spectral filtering method was used with the Material density images to isolate regions of fat, water, and their mixtures.

RESULTS:
Spectral filtering was successful in isolating regions of fat, water and their mixtures. Estimated fat percentages of each vial were as follows; 8.12 % (estimated fat %) in 10 %, 25.13% in 20%, 29.4% in 30%, 40.51% in 40%, 47.98 in 50%, 58.43% in 60%, 69.33% in 70%, 73.6% in 80%, 75.41% in 90%, and 100% in 100% oil mixture. The mean volume fraction (%) error was 3.37.

CONCLUSION:
Fast-KV Dual Energy CT with spectral filtering demonstrates accuracy that appears sufficient to quantify fat content in phantom study. It seems to be a promising method for quantification of fat density.
